Welcome to Year 6

Dear Parents  and Carers

Our first topic is The Battle of Britain where the children will have opportunities to learn about World War 2.  In literacy, we will be looking at fiction genres, journalistic writing, biographies and autobiographies, a novel study and formal and informal writing.  In Numeracy children will be covering counting, partitioning and calculating; understanding shape and measure; handling data; securing number facts. In Science we will be studying living things and their habitats, evolution and inheritance, light and shadow, animals including humans and electricity. We have planned a trip to the Centre of the Cell.

In the spring term, our topic is The Future is Your Hands with a focus on improving our local area.  We hope to visit the Houses of Parliament.  During this term our revision programme for Numeracy, Literacy and Science will begin to ensure that we are fully prepared for the SATs in May.

In the summer term, our topic is Mayans, during which we will be learning about the Mayan civilisation, society and art.  The Drama group Mexicolore will be leading a workshop about the daily life of the Mayan. In this term the children will have many opportunities to consolidate and apply their Numeracy and Literacy skills in real life contexts.

If you have expertise in any of the above areas that would enrich the children’s understanding of a topic, please speak to a member of the Year 6 team; we would welcome your involvement.

In order to achieve end-of-year writing expectations, children need to be using a joined-up handwriting script. Practise these patterns to help improve your writing!

Our school policy is that homework is sent home every Friday and should be returned every Wednesday.  There is a strong emphasis on project-based homework, which will be due in every 3 to 4 weeks.

Some children will be invited to attend after-school booster sessions; these groups will be flexible and it is very important that if invited, your child attends. This will ensure they are able to meet their end-of-year targets.  You will receive a report card at the end of each term to keep you informed as to how your child is progressing at school.

PE takes place every week. Please ensure your child keeps their PE kit in school.

Please feel free to talk to us if you have any concerns or would like to visit us in class.

Yours sincerely

The Y6 team
