Welcome to Year 5

Dear Parents and Carers

Autumn term we will be learning about life in Ancient Greece, exploring and researching many aspects of this period. Our music, art and geography will be linked with the topic wherever possible. The following terms we will be studying environmental studies in Cool Planet and The Stone Age during In the Beginning.  In literacy, we will focus on a range of text types, including myths and legends, story writing which involves a quest, journalistic report and biographies, whilst also continuing with work on spelling and grammar.  We will start off with numbers and their properties; shape, space and measure; and handling data in mathematics. In Science, we will explore the movement of the Earth, Sun and Moon, and forces. In addition, the children will be taught guitar by a specialist teacher.

All children should be using joined-up writing. Practise these patterns to help improve your handwriting!

PE takes place every week. Please ensure your child keeps their PE kit in school.

Homework: Our school policy is that homework and reading books are sent home every Friday and should be returned every Wednesday. There is a strong emphasis on project-based homework, which will be due in every 3 to 4 weeks.  Spelling and times table/mental maths tests will take place weekly. The children are expected to read as often as possible at home and every day in school. Please comment in their reading record books whenever they read to you.

What you can do to help:

• Visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/ancient_greeks/ to support your child with topic learning.

• Help your child learn their times tables from memory to improve and aid in enhancing their problem solving skills.

• Visit www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/ for English, Maths and Science revision.

Finally, if you have any concerns or would like to know more about the curriculum or activities involved, please do not hesitate to come and speak to us.  Also, if you can support our topic in any way, please let us know!

Yours sincerely

The Y5 team
