Welcome to Year 4
Dear Parents and Carers
At Selwyn Primary School, we follow a ‘Creative Curriculum’ which means we teach subjects through a cross-curricular topic. We will incorporate as many subjects as possible under our topic; however, we will also be teaching some subjects separately if this seems more appropriate. This term, most of our studies will be focused around the topic of How Very Victorian. The following terms we will be studying Invaders and Settlers and Blowing Hot and Cold.
Literacy: We will begin the term by capturing the children’s imagination by analysing, planning and writing Wasted Wishes stories. The other texts we will be studying are Turning Point stories, journalistic recounts and instructional texts. Our micro musical will be on A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
By Year 4, all children should be using joined up writing. Practise these patterns to help improve your joined up writing!
Numeracy: To begin with, the children will be learning the place value of 4-/5-digit numbers and ordering/rounding numbers. We will then move on to work on addition and subtraction. Following this, we will be learning how to tackle problems with time, money and mass before moving on to investigating patterns and properties of shape.
Additional subjects: Year 4 will be learning and comparing key teachings in religions, New Beginnings in PSHE, games and swimming in PE, collage and mosaics in Art and editing in ICT. We will also focus on William Morris designs and patterns.
Homework: Our school policy is that homework and reading books are sent home every Friday and are returned every Wednesday. There is a strong emphasis on project-based homework, which is handed in every 3 to 4 weeks.
PE takes place every week. Please ensure your child keeps their PE kit in school.
Swimming kits must be brought for swimming sessions; these should include: a swimming costume, swimming cap and towel.
What you can do to help:
• Visit http://www.topmarks.co.uk/interactive.aspx?cat=106 to support your child with topic learning.
• Help your child learn their times tables from memory – it will really help your child with their learning in Numeracy.
• Visit www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/ for English, Maths and Science revision.
• Please take your child to the local library to indulge in both fiction and non-fiction books. Reading a variety of styles can help to support their writing skills.
As always, if you would like to know more about what we are doing, or you have any queries concerning your child, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see us after school. If you can support our topic in any way, please let us know!
