Welcome to Year 1

Dear Parents and Carers

This autumn term, our topic is Coast to Coast. We will be learning about different aspects of our local area and later exploring the wider community of the United Kingdom.  Children will be developing their map-reading skills, investigating human and natural features of Britain. We will go on a walk around our local area to explore our environment and we also have many exciting trips planned. During this term we will be looking at stories set in familiar settings and instructional texts, which will cover fire and firework safety.  In Numeracy children will be counting, calculating and understanding shape and measure.

In the spring term our topic is Toy Story. During this topic, the children will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy toys from the past. It will link with Science and DT where the children will be designing and creating their own toy. In the summer term, our topic is Under the Sea. Our trip will be to an aquarium so the children can experience exciting underwater life.

We would like to invite parents in to the school each week as volunteers to support the children’s development of early reading and language. If you are interested in volunteering regularly, please contact the class teacher. Please ensure that your child brings their book bag everyday with their yellow reading record. We will listen to your child read and change their reading book once a week.

We are working on our handwriting. Practise these patterns to help improve your fine motor skills!

Our school policy is that homework is sent home every Friday and should be returned every Wednesday, signed by parents.  You will receive a report card at the end of term to keep you informed as to how your child is progressing at school.

PE takes place every week. Please ensure your child keeps their PE kit in school.

We offer fruit every day for a break-time snack.

Please feel free to talk to us if you have any concerns or would like to visit us in class.

Yours sincerely

The Year 1 team
